Giant Magellan Groundbreaking

Jan. 5, 2017

The University of Arizona marks a milestone this week in a years-long project to bring the world's largest telescope to a mountaintop in northern Chile.
Ground was broken for the Giant Magellan Telescope on Wednesday. Eventually it will be an enormous array of seven mirrors designed to collect more light and capture sharper images of stars and planets than telescopes being used today. The UA is a partner in the project and is manufacturing the 27-foot mirrors in a lab on the Tucson campus.
